Drone Operation Permits in Canada
- Read 1761 times
/5th October 2015, DRONE MARKET WATCHTM/ The Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) require unmanned air vehicle (UAV) operators to apply for SFOCs, so Transport Canada can ensure operators use their UAV reliably and safely. This applies to all UAVs used for anything but the fun of flying and regardless of how much they weigh. Transport Canada inspectors will review their SFOC application and determine what safety conditions are needed to reduce the risks. Drone (UAV) operators must send a detailed application to the Transport Canada Civil Aviation office in the region where you intend to fly your UAV. Application must include contact information and describe how, when and where drone (UAV) operators plan to use their UAV, as well as how they plan to deal with the safety risks.
Most UAV operators must get Transport Canada’s permission to use a UAV for any type of work or research.
Each SFOC contains conditions for where and how to fly, such as:
• maximum altitudes
• minimum distances from people and property
• coordination requirements with air traffic services
Two exemptions allow non-recreational operators to conduct lower risk operation in more remote areas without the need to apply for an SFOC.
Although most UAV operators will need to hold an SFOC, some may benefit from these exemptions. Our infographic, Do I need permission to fly my drone?, will help you understand if you need an SFOC or if you qualify to operate under one of the exemptions.
To operate under an exemption, you must meet all safety conditions outlined in one of the following:
• Exemption for UAVs that weigh one kg or less
• Exemption for UAVs above one kg up to and including 25 kg
If you cannot meet all of these requirements, you need an SFOC to legally operate your UAV. This infographic, Do I qualify under the UAV exemptions?, provides a quick overview of the areas where you must fly under the exemptions. You must refer to the official exemption documents and comply with the entire list of conditions.
Exemption for UAVs that weigh one kg or less:
1. Read the Exemption for UAVs that weigh one kg or less.
2. Ensure you meet all safety conditions outlined in the exemption.
3. Notify Transport Canada that you qualify under this exemption by completing and submitting the Exemption Notification Form.
4. Fly safely.
Exemption for UAVs that weigh above one kg (up to and including 25 kg):
1. Read the Exemption for UAVs above one kg (up to and including 25 kg).
2. Ensure you meet all safety conditions outlined in the exemption.
3. Notify Transport Canada that you qualify under this exemption by completing and submitting the Exemption Notification Form.
4. Fly safely.
