Drones (UAVs) to Take Off in Monitoring and Inspection of Construction Works

/17st July 2018, DRONE MARKET WATCHTM/ The development of construction projects is a complex and resource-intensive process. It is possible already, however, to monitor with drones (UAVs) projects in terms of a common project life-cycle which comprises a series of stages. Drones (UAVs) can be used everywhere, from building inspection to monitoring a project’s construction phase and documenting the progress with pictures and video reveals Drones in Building and Construction Inspection Global Market Outlook 2017÷2026.

Insurance for Commercial UAS Operations: Demystifying UAS Insurance Coverage

/28th June 2018, Joe Ernster/ When first starting out as a commercial UAV operator, many business owners and pilots do not know where to begin to locate an insurance provider. Many “standard” insurance companies do not insure, and may specifically exclude, UAS from their policies. In order to properly insure your commercial UAV operations, the best organizations to contact are aviation specific insurance companies.

Cyberhawk Completes First Inspection in South America

/23rd May 2018, Cyberhawk/ Cyberhawk’s team was approached to conduct a close visual inspection (CVI) of an elevated flare stack at an onshore refinery in South America. Prior to their UAV inspection (which was required because the flare was not burning correctly) an initial inspection of the flare stack had taken place with a ground camera and it was deemed that the entire flare tip should be replaced.

Comparing Terrestrial Laser Scanning and UAV Structure from Motion to Assess Top of Canopy Structure in Tropical Forests

/28th May 2018, The Royal Society Publishing by Sabina Roşca, Juha Suomalainen, Harm Bartholomeus, Martin Herold/ Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with digital cameras have attracted much attention from the forestry community as potential tools for forest inventories and forest monitoring. This research fills a knowledge gap about the viability and dissimilarities of using these technologies for measuring the top of canopy structure in tropical forests. In an empirical study with data acquired in a Guyanese tropical forest, we assessed the differences between top of canopy models (TCMs) derived from TLS measurements and from UAV imagery, processed using structure from motion.

The Value of Quaternions - Why they are Important?

/19th March 2018,  Dr. Peter Jacquemin, DRONE MARKET WATCHTM/ The quaternion mathematical construct is an effective method to determine the attitude or angular position of rotating bodies in three-dimensional space. The quaternion approach provides a complete solution in comparison to the Euler method which can produce an error when large angle rotations enter into adjacent quadrants. Three-dimensional space rotation is within eight quadrants and one-dimensional space rotation is within four quadrants which poses an ambiguity for inverse cosine and sine trigonometric operations when dealing with three-dimensional space.

Students from University of Colorado Boulder Construct Drone (UAV) for Studying Whales

/22nd February 2018, Daily Camera, CU News By Charlie Brennan/ Student researchers at the University of Colorado are planning to add the study of sperm whale communication patterns to the fast-growing list of tasks that can be aided by drone technology. And they — the students, not the whales — could use the public's help. CU's 12-member Search and Help Aquatic Mammals UAS aerospace engineering student team — the acronym, appropriately, is SHAMU — is trying to raise funds for a project aimed at facilitating scientific research on sperm whale communication patterns.
